Erna Rosenstein: "On the Other Side of Silence" - Retrospective in Vienna
2026-07-03
From July 3 to January 10, 2027, the Belvedere in Vienna is hosting the exhibition "Erna Rosenstein: On the Other Side of Silence"—the artist's first major retrospective in Austria.
Erna Rosenstein is a key figure of the Polish post-war avant-garde, and her art has been re-entering the international art scene in recent years. Her works have been featured at documenta 14 in Kassel and at the acclaimed exhibition "Surrealism Beyond Borders" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. Since 2019, the Hauser & Wirth gallery has managed the artist's estate in collaboration with the Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw, and solo exhibitions of her work have been held in cities such as New York and Zurich. The Vienna retrospective brings together around eighty works and marks a symbolic return for Rosenstein to the city where she studied in the early 1930s.
Concurrently, at our gallery, we are presenting five of her works from the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of the exhibition "Rhizomes of Surrealism" (including a painting about silence titled *Very Quietly and Slowly*). We highly recommend the Vienna exhibition and invite you to visit the Rewizje gallery to gain a broader perspective on Surrealism in Poland.
