In 1968 an exhibition of Contemporary French Painting was held at the Warsaw Zachęta, in which Victor Vasarely, among others, took part. In the description of the exhibition from that time one can find press reports which, besides expressions of surprise, included matter-of-fact accounts: „The greatest interest of viewers and the press (the most frequently reproduced work) was aroused by the painting of Victor Vasarely. „Express Wieczorny” reported: „One cannot begin the viewing otherwise than with the large geometric painting displayed directly opposite the entrance, which is the most striking. Its author, Vasarely, a Hungarian by origin, competes with the painter of Polish origin Berlewi for the fatherhood of „op” (optical) art. Here he has divided the large canvas of the painting into 576 squares with circles inscribed in them.” Victor Vasarely's op-art, in the late 1960s, aroused extreme emotions. Today it triumphs on the Polish auction market. The artist created reliefs, paintings, serigraphs and spatial forms; he also worked on designs for the Rosenthal company. He regarded his art as one that should be accessible to the potential viewer. Iboya is a Hungarian word for a forest. This cycle of totemic forms by Victor Vasarely, covered with an arrangement of geometric figures, was made in an edition of 50. The artist's forest, according to a pattern book prepared by him, has different base cross-sections with appropriate colours and figures assigned to them. The sculptures were designed in several sizes and in two series - measuring 85 cm in height and dating from 1970, and taller ones created in 1970-1974. (source: zacheta.art.pl)
