An author of paintings from the current of geometric abstraction. Andrzej Gieraga's artistic concept has its sources, among other things, in Władysław Strzemiński's theory of Unism and in the theory of Constructivism. The artist uses supports in shapes regarded as perfect - the square and the circle. His work can be divided into two stages, the dividing line being the early 1990s. Until then the artist created paintings in black-and-white tonalities accentuated by a textural structure. After that time, colour appears in Gieraga's painting, as well as a different relief structure giving the possibility of introducing into the work a new element, namely light, as Bożena Kowalska - an outstanding art critic dealing in particular with the current of geometric abstraction - mentions. Gieraga strives to achieve harmony in his paintings; introducing a new, unstable element, namely light, may disturb it, as Grzegorz Sztabiński notes: „Light, however, is characterised by extraordinary variability. That is why artists striving to achieve harmony in their works feared it, sought to unify or limit its modifications. Gieraga, as I have written, desires balance, but constantly subjects it to the risk of confrontation with that which may disturb it.” Andrzej Gieraga studied at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź, where from 1987 he held the office of vice-rector. From 1992 a full professor, and from 1994 also a professor at the Radom University of Technology in the Department of Art.
