Cage Filled with Matter

Bożenna Biskupska is an artist who expresses herself in many forms of artistic statement: painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video. This variety of methods may stem from the dualism of her interests - painting and sculpture - each developed separately, although one may surmise that it has its source in a single idea: the setting out of the image (wytyczanie obrazu). In 1995 a record was made of the simplest intervention with paint or linseed oil on paper, later on canvas. The artist took up the theme of the spontaneous destruction that accompanies the process of creation. The passage of time transforms the outline of the line: the linseed oil, or the oil from the paint, soaks into the material, spreading and yellowing. In the canvases from the Cage (Klatka) cycle, initially figurative and then set out by means of coloured lines, Bożenna Biskupska successively simplifies the picture plane while narrowing the colour range and using linseed oil, which over time changes the intensity of the colours.
