To this day, in fact, I paint unexpected things - animals, giraffes or surfers on Castle Square. There is a certain surrealism in it that I really like. So I painted à la Nikifor - he showed me perspective and generally delighted me. - Edward Dwurnik. Małgorzata Czyńska, Moje Królestwo. A Conversation with Edward Dwurnik, Wołowiec 2016, p. 107. In 1965, in Kielce, Edward Dwurnik had the chance to encounter Nikifor's works for the first time. He met the Krynica Matejko in person during the latter's stay in the capital, when Nikifor was painting in the courtyard of the Academy of Fine Arts. The Warsaw painter was enormously impressed by the compositions he saw and decided to continue the work of the artist from the art brut circle. On small pieces of paper Nikifor painted commemorative views - schematically rendered public buildings, churches, Orthodox churches. In a specific way he built perspective, while at the same time emphasising the structure of the urban panoramas with a firm black line. In these realistic watercolours Edward Dwurnik perceived a unique synthesis of painterly form and an exceptional sense of colour. Nikifor's biography also influenced the artist's decision to lead the life of a wandering painter and, like the master from Krynica, to immortalise in panoramas the images of the places he encountered.
