‘The Impatience of the Subconscious’ Jerzy Tchórzewski Surrealist (Works from 1948–1958) Exactly 100 years have passed since André Breton published Manifeste du surréalisme and Second manifeste du surréalisme and called for a crisis of consciousness. On this anniversary, we wanted to take another look at Jerzy Tchórzewski's work from the period when he began creating surrealist works, and then joined the international group Phases, which brought together artists working in the surrealist movement in combination with lyrical abstraction. The exhibition presents 15 works on canvas and over 30 gouaches on paper from 1948–1958. In 1960, the Furstenberg Gallery in Paris held an exhibition of Tchórzewski's works resulting from his relationship with surrealism and the Phases group. The exhibition at the Wallspace Gallery will feature some of the works that were displayed at that exhibition. For many years, art historians believed that there was no surrealism in Polish art, only distant echoes of this movement. However, in recent years, researchers have been re-examining the work of Polish artists and their connections with global surrealist trends. The artist himself aptly described and, in a sense, predicted this situation: "Both of us [Balzak and Kazimierz Mikulski] came from a very branched family tree planted by André Breton. It was a surrealist tree, so it is no wonder that it bore very different and peculiar fruits, which were difficult to name and classify and for this reason they make mistakes." – Jerzy Tchórzewski 27 June – 9 August 2024
