We invites you to the exhibition ‘Nie pokój’ (Un-Settled), where you will be able to see works by Bogusław Szwacz and Jerzy Tchórzewski, mainly from the 1950s. The exhibition will run until 25 April.The 1950s were a turning point for Polish art, when surrealistic, expressive compositions flowing straight from the imagination were created. Both artists built their own world, which was an escape from political, social and economic problems, as well as memories of the atrocities they had experienced. They wanted to live, experience and awaken new emotions, and they wanted to do so on their own terms. Both established relationships with the French artistic community – the surrealists. In this context, their art is spontaneous, revolutionary, subversive and avant-garde, unlike traditional Polish painting of the interwar period (Kapists), not subject to doctrine and thoroughly contemporary, as Dorota Folga-Januszewska writes in her text for the exhibition: ‘When looking today at the surrealist fascinations of Jerzy Tchórzewski and Bogusław Szwacz, it is difficult to shake off the reflection that surrealism was a truly effective antidote to war, trauma and misunderstanding of cruelty.’ Folga-Januszewska refers not only to paintings, but also to numerous notes and texts by both artists: "Reading the texts of Szwacz and Tchórzewski from the 1940s and 1950s, one gets the impression that the most important theme of that time was the open struggle between reality and unreality and super-reality. The process of escape without escaping. Maintaining the continuity of the TRADITION OF THE AVANT-GARDE ALONGSIDE the necessity of living in the NON-AVANT-GARDE, socialist realism – that is, another form of doctrinal fiction described by Orwell.” She concludes: “This process of ‘the need for paintings’ is interesting. Jerzy Tchórzewski and Bogusław Szwacz prove to be good guides and companions on a journey to the sanatorium of painting."
